Paper published: Identifying and comparing information cultures: a perspective from research institutes and academic libraries

Delighted to co-author this published paper with my Brazilian colleagues. Identifying and comparing information cultures: a perspective from research institutes and academic libraries

This article aims to identify the information culture of two research institutes and an academic library, to verify the alignment of this culture with the organizational strategy. The methodological approach adopted follows the phases of a Survey research, where informational cultures are examined through a questionnaire.

The responding subjects were all, in the three institutions, employees who work in operational routines. The Favorability Index is used to qualitatively measure the dominant information culture, which enables comparisons between the organizations analyzed. This is a multiple case study combined with qualitative analysis. The results indicate that the academic library analyzed is dominated by the relationship-based information culture.

Research institute A has a results-oriented culture as its predominant culture, while research institute B is not dominated by a single culture, showing a tripolar character of relationship, outcome and risk. In conclusion, it can be said that the results found are unexpected. Since innovation and risk are key strategies and objectives of research institutes, the dominant information culture is not aligned with such strategies. Furthermore, the tripolar culture of institute B contradicts the literature that states that organizational information culture tends to be dominated by one or two cultures.

This may show that the interaction between information cultures may be more complex than previously thought, offering new possibilities for future research.
