The International Science Council (ISC) recently published a guide for policy makers: Evaluating rapidly developing technologies including AI, large language models and beyond. This builds on high level principles already published from UNESCO, OECD, EU and UN etc.
According to Peter Gluckman, ISC President, “In an era marked by rapid technological innovation and complex global challenges, the ISC’s framework for comprehensive and multidimensional analysis of the potential impacts empowers leaders to make informed, responsible decisions. It ensures that as we advance technologically, we do so with a careful consideration of the ethical, social, and economic implications”.
These may be helpful to guide those developing Large Language Models (LLM) and Chatbots both inside organisations, national and international projects targeting scientific communities.
I also found this article of interest published last week from the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace. “A Global South Perspective on Explainable AI” by Jake Okechukwu Efforduh. This states:
“A context-driven approach is necessary to translate principles like explainability into practice globally. These vignettes illustrate how AI can be made more trustworthy for users in the Global South through more creative, context-rooted approaches to legibility.”
“Among the first sets of influential international guidelines that have shaped AI policies globally is the Principles on AI by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). Third in a list of five values-based principles, the OECD principle on transparency and explainability prescribes transparency and responsible disclosures around AI systems to ensure that people understand when they are engaging with them and can challenge relevant outcomes.”
