Using text analytics to detect new natural hydrogen plays in the subsurface.

In April 2021 I worked on the world’s first large scale text analytics project to detect natural hydrogen. Working with a natural resources exploration company, this was to detect both explicit and implicit evidence for natural hydrogen in legacy oil & gas documentation. This contributed to the development of a new hydrogen play. It was the world’s first known large scale use of text mining for this purpose.

Naturally occurring hydrogen reservoirs in the subsurface (natural hydrogen) differs from industrial hydrogen as it does not need to be manufactured and requires very little processing to be used as a fuel. Natural hydrogen has been historically overlooked, but may represent a new frontier in the energy transition towards decarbonisation.

The first international conference on natural hydrogen took place last year, more information here:https://geoscientist.online/sections/unearthed/natural-hydrogen-the-new-frontier
